2010 Colour Trends by CityLine's Sharon Grech

Colours outside your door may be gone for the winter season…..but hot hues for our Canadian interiors are plentiful!

Green, of course is the comfort fashion colour – for all seasons.  But as we approach a new decade, green is beginning to change its tone. A bolder, fresher green like Benjamin Moore’s cedar green (2034-40) has been prevalent on the runways for a few seasons in clothing and certainly in fashion accessories.  But now we are seeing it creep into the home with furniture and even paint.   As nature’s neutral, cedar green makes the perfect backdrop to a variety of hues:  both the natural brights and more muted shades that we will be seeing in the 2010 palette
Yellow, which has been very strong in fashion for 2 seasons is now comfortable in the home setting as Benjamin Moore’s sundance (2022-50), a yellow that is just as cheerful as it sounds.  It makes a lively accent to more neutral tones and adds warmth and energy to any space where you want a real change.
Orange is still in the picture (it also happens to be my favourite colour!!!) but in 2010 expect to see a softer orange, almost more apricot, but definitely not a pale peach like we recall from the 80’s!  August morning (2156-40) is the 2010  orange pick – it just radiates with warmth.
Red is less muddy and has been tuned up with a jolt of yellow so it feels more modern and fresh in any environment.  Look at Benjamin Moore’s claret rose (2008-20).  You will see this contemporary red paired with paler, neutral greens for an unexpected twist or with the current array of greys for a more formal look.

Purples are very important to the new home décor palette.   As we redefine luxury for the new decade, we welcome purple to add a luxurious element to the palette.   Look to Benjamin Moore’s violetta (AF-615), and slip (AF-605) for some calming and relaxing tones, or caponata (AF-650) for a grounding rich shade.

And finally the blue story, which builds on the purples and also brings a touch of luxury to the new palette.  A more edgy take on traditional navy is midnight navy (2067-10) with more black.  Also with a nod to history and tradition blueberry (2063-30) is a modern twist on the luxurious French blue.

So if you are missing nature’s colourful garden and can’t wait for spring, try bringing some of these fresh new colours into your home this winter!
